The Latest Pain Management Techniques That Are Proving Effective for Patients

Posted: October 26, 2016

Pain is not something that is always easy to manage. Therefore, researchers and doctors have been studying and implementing a number of pain management techniques over the years. The research has lead to a variety of non-invasive treatments that are making both patients and doctors much happier.

A Very Brief History of Pain Management

Throughout history, humans have tried different techniques to alleviate pain. These include:

  • Trepanation, or cutting holes in someone’s head to reduce pain
  • Electric eels
  • Opium
  • Morphine
  • Willow bark
  • Sacrifices to the gods.

People have been willing to try anything to get rid of their pain. Some techniques have modern-day counterparts, but are less dangerous than treatments of old. For instance, opiates are used but are regulated. The same goes for morphine.

Humans have learned from the trials and errors of the past and have created some of the most potent—yet safe—pain management techniques.

3 Types of Modern, Non-Invasive Pain Management Techniques

When looking for pain management in Las Vegas, a patient would do well to consider the following 3 approaches.

  1. Non-Drug Pain Management

Exercise, chiropractic treatments and physical therapy are all proving to be helpful in the management of pain. Many people assume that exercise would contribute to more pain, particularly if the patient doesn’t exercise regularly. However, exercise can be done in a multitude of settings: going on a soothing stroll through the park, stretching or engaging in aerobic exercises in a swimming pool can all help people dealing with back, hip and overall body pain.

Chiropractic treatments don’t have to involve the shudder-inducing crunching and popping manipulation anymore either. The latest techniques are much less invasive and are typically barely felt. These treatments can help with pain throughout the body, from head to toe.

Physical therapy can also be useful to those recovering from an accident or injury. The therapist will help the patient slowly stretch the involved muscles and strengthen the weakened area.

A combination of all these techniques often leads to improvement, recovery and reduced pain rather quickly.

  1. Pharmaceuticals

Muscle relaxants and antidepressants are now being used in conjunction with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin and ibuprofen. Antidepressants have been shown to reduce neuropathic pain, as have neuromodulating medicines. Narcotic medications are typically reserved for short-term use, such as after surgery.

  1. “Alternative” Pain Treatments

Behavioral therapy techniques, meditation, yoga and tai chi have been proven effective in pain management. The Mayo Clinic performed a study that showed how the mind-body connection has a definite impact on pain – something many people forget about or haven’t considered. The mind is very powerful, and regular mind-body practices have helped people lessen or completely overcome their pain issues.

Las Vegas Pain Management Centers Provide All Kinds of Treatment Options

Doctors, researchers and Las Vegas pain management specialists are doing all they can to find effective treatments for their patients. As time goes on, many of these treatments are not only proving to be non-invasive, they’re proving effective even without medications.
